Getting married in New York is a straightforward process, but there are a few important steps to follow. Here’s what you need to know:
Step 1: Apply for a Marriage License
- Where to apply: Visit any Town or City Clerk’s Office in New York State.
- Who must apply: Both parties must appear in person together.
- When to apply: At least 24 hours before the ceremony. The license is valid for 60 days (or 180 days for active military).
What to Bring
- Proof of identity: Valid photo ID (driver’s license, passport, or non-driver ID)
- Proof of age: Birth certificate, passport, or other official document
- Previous marriages: If previously married, bring divorce decree or death certificate
Fees
- Marriage license fee: $40.00
- Payable by cash, check, or money order
Who Can Officiate
- Judges, justices, clergy, and registered marriage officers
- Newark Valley’s Town Clerk is a certified Marriage Officer and can perform ceremonies by appointment
- New York State offers a “one-day marriage officiant license,” which allows a friend or family member to legally officiate a wedding without becoming ordained or registering as a professional officiant. Ask the Town Clerk for more information.
After the Ceremony
- The officiant/or the newly married couple will file the license with the issuing clerk
- You may request certified copies of your marriage certificate for legal use. These will be $10/copy.
